1.What is your name, where are you from and what do you do?
My name is Hilary and I run a business called Bunny with a Toolbelt. I work out of my home studio in Portland, Oregon making wood animals, wedding cake toppers, and nativity sets.
2. Tell us a little more about yourself?
I’ve been making my living for over 20 years as an artist. I also make large scale installations, wearable art for performance, and other pieces where I explore the struggles for power between humans and the natural world. You can see that work at my other website www.hilarypfeifer.com
3.How did you acquire your craft/art?
My parents are very creative individuals, so I was always exposed to learning opportunities and open to new techniques. My father set up a bench for me in his wood shop, and my mother was a painter who volunteered at an arts center where I took all kinds of classes. Much of what I made in elementary through high school was self-guided, but I always had some sort of creative project going. I studied drawing and painting in my early college years, took some workshops at Penland School of Crafts, every class the ceramics department had to offer at the University of Oregon, and started my first business making porcelain beads. A few years later I decided to go back to school to earn a BFA in metalsmithing from Oregon College of Art and Craft, where I also studied furniture building.
4. What inspires you?
I love to visit botanical gardens and greenhouses and look at plant life. I also feel inspired by visiting museums and fine art exhibitions. Seeing what others have made gives me faith in humanity.
5.What is your creative process?
I don’t have a specific process, but would say that having both my Bunny with a Toolbelt business and my fine art career in my life tend to generate an endless stream of ideas and projects. I draw a lot to generate ideas before I get into the studio. Then I just try to make as fast as possible so my hands do more thinking than my brain. The best forms come from that process.
6. What do you find to be the secret to your success?
Work hard, be professional, don’t let anything out of the studio that you don’t feel 100% about.
7.where are you now in your creative business and where will you be in the future?
My business is always growing and changing—I try not to have too rigid an idea about the future because opportunities may come up that I didn’t expect.
8.Any words of wisdom to share with fellow artist/crafters?
get comfortable with a camera because most people will see your work online rather than in person. Have a professional take your pictures when a really important opportunity comes up—it will be worth the money you spend.
9.What is your most favorite handmade item you have had to part with?
I just sold one of my favorite pieces—the double happiness dachshund it has two rainbows with a poofy cloud on top of each. I don’t know if it’s my favorite piece—to quote Duke Ellington, my “favorite piece is the one I’m working on now.”
10. Why do you love doing what you do (what fuels the fire)?
My days are my own—I work out of a studio in my backyard—so I get to set the pace. I balance it all out with work, spending time with my sweetie and our dog, cooking for friends or working in the garden.
11. Shameless advertising, go for it babe? We want all your info!
